Spring is finally here and I hope everyone enjoyed their March Break! My colleagues and I have appreciated the chance to prepare for another push in this contentious legislative session. As we welcome back this new season of new beginnings, let’s embrace the warmer weather, plants blooming, birds chirping and community members gathering together and standing for what’s right time and time again. Take a look below to see some of the amazing events coming up in Dartmouth South! You don’t want to miss Eastern Front Theatre’s second run of Fat Juliet, which opened on March 20th and will run until March 29th.
Margaret’s House has their Spring wishlist out - check out the “Get Involved” section of the newsletter for more information on how you can help support so many members of our community by helping them with supplies that they need.
The Macdonald Bridge is closing again this weekend to continue construction following the removal of bridge fees. The bridge will be closing again this weekend today, Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m. and will reopen on Monday, March 24 at 5:30 a.m.
Spring may bring longer days and warmer nights but it’s also tax season. If you need help filing your taxes the CRA is offering several free tax clinics. You can use this helpful tool to find a clinic near you. The Salvation Army’s HEAT fund has closed applications for the 2025 season. The Seniors Care Grant and Heating Assistance Rebate Program remain open until March 31st.
Many of you have reached out to express concern and confusion about this government’s legislative agenda which includes many measures to consolidate power, control post secondary institutions and open up fracking and uranium mining. None of this was what the government campaigned on and it’s been heartening to see the many Nova Scotians paying attention to our legislative process and working hard to make sure that the laws passed reflect the will of Nova Scotians.
So far, with your help we’ve been successful in getting the government to walk back many of the more controversial policies proposed including changes to the office of the Auditor General and the Freedom of Information and Privacy commissioner. We support the government’s interprovincial trade bill, but also applaud the many regulated professions that forced them to make important changes around labour mobility to keep the public safe. Your voice matters! Thank you for speaking up and advocating for what you believe in. Public engagement is an integral part of a functioning democracy and that is what we saw from Nova Scotians this week.
As always, if you need assistance, please reach out to my office at 902-406-2301 or claudiachender@nsmla.ca. Have a wonderful weekend,
Claudia

 | ShakeSpeare By The Sea & Eastern Front Theatre Present.March 20 - 29 - A new play by Stevey Hunter, Directed by Kat Hunter
“FAT JULIET” is a modern re-telling of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet told entirely from Juliet’s point of view, who happens to be fat. With all the joy and teenage angst of a first love. “FAT JULIET” is an exciting sleepover-style romp that takes an intimate look at what it is to love yourself. |
