N.S. Premier Tim Houston tries to defend his lack of consultation with Mi’kmaw Chiefs
In the house on Thursday, NDP and opposition leader Claudia Chender referred again to her questions to the premier on Wednesday about the chiefs’ letter condemning Houston’s plan to unilaterally remove the bans on fracking and uranium exploration in the province.
She said it looks as if a meeting with the chiefs has now been scheduled “better late than never.”
Chender noted that other groups, including municipalities such as Colchester, also have concerns and are “currently having a rigorous debate about the legislation.”
She asked the premier, “Wouldn’t it have been better to consult with the Federation of Municipalities before moving forward with the legislation?”
In his replies to the NDP leader, Houston neither confirmed nor denied that a meeting with the chiefs has been scheduled, and instead spent his time attacking the NDP, and the opposition leader, personally.
