Climate Change and Natal Day

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

It breaks my heart to open another newsletter by addressing yet another disastrous weather event in Nova Scotia. My thoughts are with the families of those who were lost in the floods and with the many Nova Scotians who again suffered so much loss last weekend.

In the past 12 months, we have seen first-hand the terrifying effects of climate change. Hurricane Fiona, then the wildfires that raged in many parts of the province, and the recent flooding we have seen from Bridgewater to Bedford and many points between.

With hurricane season is right around the corner, we are redoubling our efforts to press the Province to do the work to help us prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change that have become so real this year. From moving ahead with the Atlantic Loop, to finally proclaiming the Coastal Protection Act to safeguard our coasts, to helping Nova Scotians secure and afford energy for the future, to protecting the Chignecto Isthmus and our food security, there are so many ways this government can take immediate action, and we will continue to press for action.

In the meantime, https://novascotia.ca/alerts/, is a good resource for updates on the floods, resources, and other safety information.

If you are a residential property owner or tenant, or small business or non-profit, you can apply for disaster financial assistance for damage or loss from storm flooding:

The Nova Scotia Health Tick Service offers Nova Scotians access to timely and relevant information and education, along with assistance in coordinating care for tick-borne infections.

This provincial service includes the Tick Helpline (1-866-266-7199), evidence-based information/guidelines/resources, The Nova Scotia Tick Talk Bot which provides key information about ticks and tick bites.

Additional resources from the Department of Health and Wellness and Public Health on tick bite prevention, and what to do when they happen, can be found here: https://novascotia.ca/ticksafety/.
