Do you have a new MACPASS?

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

The gardens at Sullivan’s Pond and in the Dartmouth Common are finally blooming, and spring is in the air. The Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission held a wildly successful food crawl Thursday May 18th with amazing eats across downtown Dartmouth, if you missed it make sure to check out future events or better yet head downtown and do your own food tour!

As we head towards summer there are still six weeks of the school year left, and we know that top of mind this week for many parents is the CUPE strike at HRCE schools. These Early Childhood Educators, school support workers, library technicians and other workers are the core to the functioning of our schools, and many do not earn a living wage.

Currently many students normally supported by EPAs and all pre primary students are unable to attend school. They are being denied their right to an education; this is discrimination and it is unfair to the students and their families. I have heard from many families who are struggling to figure out how to juggle work, childcare and other supports.

The solution is for the province to return to bargaining with CUPE immediately and ensure that students and education workers are back in the classroom as soon as possible with a fair deal.

Get your new sticker online at MyMACPASS.com or by visiting the MACPASS Customer Service Centre on Princess Margaret Boulevard. You can also call the MACPASS office at 902-436-3100. More information and videos on using, installing and updating your MACPASS can be found on the HHB website. I can say from experience, it’s an easy switch!

Check Before You Burn

The wildfire in the southeast of Weymouth and the recent drying up of Sullivan’s Pond in the last few weeks are stark reminders of just how dry this spring has been in our province. Ahead of campfire and yard work season (and on our Provincial Parks’ opening weekend) it’s a good time to get into the habit of checking what the burning restrictions are in your area. You can always check online at novascotia.ca/burnsafe or call the toll free phone line: 1-855-564-2876(BURN). A recorded message updated daily.

There are also municipal restrictions to take into account if you’re planning to burn within Dartmouth South, which is Permit Required Zone. You can see the restrictions and allowances on HRM’s Burning Rules and Regulations site.

As always, if you need assistance, please reach out to my office at 902-406-2301 or claudiachendermla@gmail.com.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Claudia

Provincial

ACCESSIBILITY: Goods and Services Standard Development Committee

Last week the Province announced the 22 Nova Scotians who will help develop the Province's next accessibility standard as members of the Goods and Services Standard Development Committee. The committee will develop recommendations for the minister of Justice to help remove barriers to the delivery of goods and services for people with disabilities such as:

  • inaccessible customer service

  • stereotypes and assumptions about people with disabilities

  • policy barriers to delivering and receiving goods and services.
