Affordability support needed, Dartmouth Cove infill update

Affordability

Affordability is the top concern for many people reaching out to my constituency office recently. Surging fuel prices, inflation, and rising interest rates are hitting Dartmouthians hard and those living close to the poverty line even harder.

Unlike other jurisdictions, there has been no direct support to Nova Scotians to help cushion the blow of inflation. Despite the fact that we have some of the highest rates of child poverty, food insecurity, and power and oil rates in the country, the government has indicated that they are not considering supports at this time.

We need action now. The pressure is already too intense for most folks in the community—and has been for a long time. Higher minimum wages, actually affordable and transparent housing investments, school food programs, and paid sick days for all workers are just a few items I continue to press for.

Dartmouth Cove

The time to provide feedback to the Federal government about the Dartmouth Cove infill proposal has come and gone. The decision will turn on whether or not navigable waters or sea life are impacted. COVE has also offered comment regarding the impact to navigable waters. Unfortunately the Federal government is unable to consider the true travesty of this proposal: turning our waterfront into a dump for the better part of a decade. The Province doesn't have jurisdiction over this project, but I continue to advocate against the infill. Read my op-ed in the Chronicle Herald here.

Wishing you a safe and happy weekend!
