NDP urges N.S. government to act on intimate-partner violence epidemic

The Opposition NDP has renewed an urgent call for stable, core funding for organizations that provide “life-saving services” to Nova Scotians experiencing intimate partner violence.

In the aftermath of yet another killing in Nova Scotia being attributed to the scourge, NDP Leader Claudia Chender wrote a letter to Premier Tim Houston urging immediate government action.

“The tragic loss of yet another Nova Scotian to intimate partner violence is devastating and infuriating,” Chender said. “We are in the midst of an epidemic, one that demands an immediate and decisive response.”

Chender said the government let down hundreds of thousands of people across the province with its last budget.

“There is no new spending to address gender-based violence, and there is no increase in core funding to support the organizations that are doing the critical frontline work. Nova Scotians deserve better.”
