Fate of deal for free birth control and diabetes medication up in the air as Nova Scotia didn’t sign on before federal election call
For the past two months, Nova Scotia Health Minister Michelle Thompson has said the province is “in active negotiations” with the federal Health department in response to repeated questions from NDP leader Claudia Chender.
On Friday, with a federal election looming and worry that millions in available federal money could evaporate, Chender raised the topic during Question Period. She asked why Pharmacare wasn’t on Premier Tim Houston’s “wish list” in the letter sent to new Prime Minister Mark Carney and federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
“Why is this government making Nova Scotians wait for free diabetes care and contraception?” Chender demanded to know.
“We understand there is a potential opportunity with the federal government — just because it’s not mentioned in the letter doesn’t mean it’s not a top priority for myself and the premier,” Thompson fired back.
