Opposition pushes N.S. government for core funding to combat intimate partner violence

“This is a budget session, this is the moment when we understand what kind of resources the government is putting forward to implement their agenda,” Opposition and NDP Leader Claudia Chender said Thursday.

“Based on that, the government is not doing what they promised and absolutely not doing what is needed to save lives in this province,” she said.

“It’s important that people remember that six women have died in the last several months, seven people in total, as a direct result of gender-based violence. We have recognized it as an epidemic in this House, we have lots of expert opinion that tells us that we need epidemic-level funding and government has not come to the table with that.”

Chender tabled a bill in the Nova Scotia legislature that passed last September, declaring the scourge of intimate partner violence an epidemic in the province.

In the current legislative session, both the NDP and the Liberal party tabled bills to support consistent funding for organizations that help combat intimate-based and gender-based violence.
