N.S. university governance bill 'extreme act of political interference,' SMU professor says

NDP and Opposition Leader Claudia Chender called the news conference Wednesday morning to say her party would force debate on the government’s latest contentious proposal during Wednesday’s proceedings in the House.

“This government has been known to back down in the face of pressure,” Chender said when asked about the potential outcome of the forced debate.

“We certainly hope that the government will take a second thought. We did make a motion in Public Bills to stop the bill from going forward, to go back for further consideration, but that motion was defeated by government members. We will bring amendments to all of the provisions that are problematic. . . . At the end of the day, this is up to the government. If they had done their job and they had consulted with the sector prior to introduction, this bill never would have come forward.”
