Nova Scotia NDP critical of Progressive Conservative ‘silencing’ tactics

But Claudia Chender, leader of the official opposition NDP, argues that shutting down debate will do more than silence the voices of constituents who elected her to speak on their behalf. 

Chender argues that it means sweeping legislation introduced this week that will erode the power of municipalities, universities, and of the auditor general, will become law before politicians, experts, or citizens even have a chance to understand what these changes will mean. On Friday, she told reporters:

This motion removes the ability we have to delay. And while the government will paint delay as ‘a waste of time,’ in a dysfunctional legislature like ours where we have no calendar for when we will sit, where a bill can come forward with no consultation and no warning and pass into law in the space of a single week, delay is all we can use to make sure we have something that looks like responsible government.
