NDP challenges premier on fixed-term leases, while property owners association says they help prevent homelessness
The NDP challenged Premier Tim Houston on fixed-term leases Tuesday, the same day a letter from a property owners group was shared saying they help prevent homelessness.
During Tuesday’s question period, NDP leader Claudia Chender raised the issue of fixed-term leases being a contributor to more people having been “renovicted,” and to profit increases for a few large corporate landlords.
Chender asked the premier if he would commit to attaching the 5% rent cap to the physical unit/apartment rather than the tenant to prevent abuse of fixed-term leases. But the premier’s reply did not address that question.
