Government’s housing efforts stagger forward
NDP leader Claudia Chender wants the Province to focus on providing more affordable housing. Chender told the Committee:
Where we have seen success in affordable housing is with partnership, partnership between the private sector and the non-market housing sector supported by all levels of government. We have seen that at Mount Hope in Dartmouth. The government tried to give a private developer $22 million, the developer said ‘no thanks.’ But then a non-market housing provider [the YWCA] came together with a private developer [Shaw Group] independent of government, figured it out, asked for $2.9 million, and now there are 32 families living in those houses.
So I think we have to get creative. And this government’s slavish devotion to paving the way for developers at the expense of actually creating the robust amount of affordable housing we need, is very disappointing.
