Houston government announces one percentage point cut to HST to take effect next April

Claudia Chender, leader of the NDP, said many Nova Scotians are having a hard time.

“Things are just too expensive across the board and certainly they are looking for some kind of relief,” Chender said.

“A one per cent reduction of the HST is really going to benefit the people who buy the most expensive things. On an everyday purchase, it really doesn’t amount to all that much.”

Chender said there are better ways to help Nova Scotians, ways that the NDP have long proposed to combat a rising cost of living.

“Investments in housing, taking the whole HST off of the remaining groceries and other essentials that it’s on, using the government’s fiscal leaders to actually help people in a tangible way, and I’m not convinced this is going to do it.”
