Nova Scotia increases home-heating rebate to $1,000 per household

“Finally,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender. “We’ve been calling for an announcement like this for months and months. As inflation has continued to go up and we’ve heard from Nova Scotians across the province how much they are struggling, we warned the government that winter is coming.
“We all know, thousands of years in, how the seasons work, so we are very glad to see some action. It’s unfortunate that we have a Christmastime announcement for a program that won’t open until January, the coldest season of the year, but I think Nova Scotians are going to be able to keep the lights on and heat their homes.”
Chender said structural changes are needed to the way government supports Nova Scotians, changes that go beyond a one-year heating assistance increase.
“We know that the thresholds don’t make any sense anymore, that the amounts don’t make any sense anymore. One time is better than nothing but our hope and our advocacy will be focused on ensuring that this is the beginning of a comprehensive look at the way this government can support Nova Scotians through this cost of living crisis.”
