Nova Scotia premier blames feds for carbon tax

“. . .

NDP Leader Claudia Chender called the premier's comments “very disappointing.”

“I think it's a pretty clear cut situation, regardless of how any of us feels about it, the federal government has been very clear that all provinces are required to price carbon,” Chender. “And that price went up. So we were told that we could submit a plan or they would do it for us. And we did not ever submit a plan to price carbon for consumers.”

She added that the province did introduce an output-based pricing system for large emitters but did not do what they were asked to do.

“I was glad to see that the rebate cheques will arrive when the carbon pricing comes into effect in July, so I think it's really important that that pricing is not going to impact the heating season, because, of course, we're very concerned about the cost of living right now and the challenges that families are facing, particularly around energy and food.”

But the carbon tax will certainly have an impact, Chender said, adding that all she has seen from Houston's government is “bluster” and a refusal to deal with the real issue.

“It's not doing anything to help Nova Scotia families,” she said. “And it's not really doing much to help our energy commitments. So, it's a real missed opportunity.”
