Houston government seeks to oust Cape Breton's Keith Bain as House speaker
“. . .
From NDP Leader Claudia Chender’s standpoint, Bain has proven to be a steady, solid personality during some challenging times, “through staffing issues at Province House, COVID, emergency sittings of the Legislature … Keith has been a very fair Speaker,” she said.
“The mark of an impartial Speaker is that most people feel like he’s not quite on their side; it’s an independent office of the legislature. And Keith has accomplished that.
“For the focus going into the fall legislative session (next week) to be on removing a Progressive Conservative member from an independent post, I think it’s a great shame, a waste of energy and most certainly inappropriate.”
. . .
“It is highly improper for the government to be discussing removing the Speaker of the House,” Chender said. “The Office of the Speaker is not a political appointment, not like being an executive council. It is voted for by the members of the legislature.”
Not since 1875 has a Nova Scotia Speaker of the House been forcibly removed from the position.
