NDP bill would pause Pharmacare premiums to ease strain on seniors

“The cost of living is skyrocketing,” Chender said. “That is an incontrovertible statement. The question is what can the government do about it. This government has done less than every other provincial government in the country to address the real strain that the rising cost of everything is having on families, and seniors in particular, and all Nova Scotians.”

Chender said the rising costs are happening in the context of a provincial health-care crisis.

“What specific moves can be made right now that will help people’s lives,” Chender said. “It seems very clear that if government could freeze the seniors and family Pharmacare payments, people would be able to take their prescriptions, they could afford them and it would very likely keep a lot of people out of hospital and prevent them from having to try to access health care when we know that that is such a struggle right now.

“We think that this is a proposal that makes a huge amount of sense, we think that it will help a lot of people.”
