N.S. school break extension 'just one more thing' for parents to deal with

“Dartmouth South MLA Claudia Chender said the decision to extend the break by two days doesn’t make sense since it was previously stated there are enough vaccines for every child who intends to get vaccinated before Christmas.

But it’s also the ‘total disregard for the many ways in which the burdens of the pandemic are disproportionately borne by women,’ the NDP status of women critic said.

‘We know women tend to be the ones in families who bear the disproportionate burden of child care,’ Chender said, adding most nurses are women.

‘We don’t take issue with these decisions in the name of public health as long as they make sense, which this one doesn’t, or are made with an eye to ameliorating their impact, in this case particularly on women and families, and that clearly hasn’t been done here.’

Chender, as well as Liberal education critic Derek Mombourquette, questioned why schools aren’t offering vaccine clinics during school hours to make it easier on families.
