Community calls for fix to algal blooms, weeds and bacteria in Dartmouth lakes

New Democrat MLAs Claudia Chender and Susan Leblanc said they hosted the meeting to identify how the community wants the province to deal with ecological threats to Dartmouth’s lakes.
They were collecting signatures for a petition to table at the legislature this fall, calling on the government to “take action to protect the lakes of Dartmouth,” by exercising its legislative authority over the area’s lakes, overseeing their health and working with the municipal government to improve lake conditions.
Chender, the MLA for Dartmouth South, said she hears concerns about lakes from constituents every week. Her riding includes part of Lake Banook, which she described as having ‘one of the most well-known paddling courses in North America.’
She said the North American Indigenous Games is coming next summer, followed by the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2022.
"‘These are massive competitions,’ she said in an interview.
‘It’s really under threat and we don’t have anyone saying “this is my job, this is my job to fix these lakes.” ‘
