Claudia Chender, NDP justice critic, said she’s ‘deeply disappointed’ by Furey’s decision not to comment on a case that appears to be ‘a grave miscarriage of justice.’ Chender said Furey is ultimately responsible for upholding the justice system and ensuring that it works fairly and to the benefit of all Nova Scotians. As such, Furey also has a responsibility to explain to Nova Scotia why the system failed Assoun, she said.
‘It’s the job of the minister of justice and the attorney general to really be the face of the system,’ Chender said. ‘It seems clear that this is a place where the system has failed.’
