Chronicle Herald: Education bill hastily amended to restore inclusion language

Claudia Chender, NDP MLA for Dartmouth South, said the change would have significantly weakened the language surrounding inclusive education in the act.

’It doesn’t say schools have to do this. It sort of says they should think about doing it but there’s no legal implication if they don’t do it,’ she said.

’The word “shall” is unambiguous, the wording that came in (Monday) was not unambiguous at all, it was entirely ambiguous.’

. . .

Chender said this issue with inclusive language highlights her concerns about the Liberal education reform bill — mainly that it attempts to do too much too quickly without proper consideration.

Moreover, with a major government-commissioned report on inclusive education due at the end of the month, Chender said she’s unsure why the government doesn’t wait for those recommendations before making sweeping changes to the Education Act.
