CHRONICLE HERALD: Justice critics call on province to boost staff safety at Waterville youth jail
The case of this young man is, like many cases in our justice system, incredibly complex. What is clear is that we must ensure the safety of our corrections staff while they do a very difficult and sometimes dangerous job. We expect them to act fairly, keep peace, and work in difficult conditions. They must be properly equipped to do so. We also have a responsibility to offenders, particularly young offenders, to do everything we can to ensure that they come out of this system better equipped for life than they went in. We must take seriously our responsibility to rehabilitate.
